UC Irvine Department of Urology

RESIDENCY AND FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMS

A Message from the Chair

The residency program in Urology at the University of California, Irvine seeks to transform physicians into the most knowledgeable, insightful and well trained urologists of the day. To this end, great effort is expended with regard to outstanding and varied clinical exposure, a superb didactic and hands on educational opportunity, and a bona fide laboratory experience. A predominantly fellowship-trained faculty and dedicated researchers are committed to this goal.

At the University of California, Irvine, the Department of Urology faculty is dynamic and dedicated to the advancement of diagnostic and therapeutic options for the entire spectrum of urologic diseases and disorders. The department is committed to the development of new technologies and the education of urologists in an effort to promote wellness of urologic patients worldwide. The residency program provides training in all aspects of urologic disease. The residents receive extensive training in open and endoscopic procedures, laparoscopy and other minimally invasive techniques, urologic pathology, uroradiology, and management of non-operative urologic conditions. The Urology Department encourages and supports both clinical and basic science research. Resident educational endeavors proceed on both traditional (i.e., didactic and in-hospital) as well as more modern levels (i.e. trainers, models, laboratory sessions, and virtual reality).

Introduction

UCI is the fastest growing campus in the University of California system. The UCI Medical Center (UCIMC) is an integral part of the UCI system. UCIMC is located in the city of Orange, 15 miles north of the UCI main campus. At UCIMC there are over 100 clinical trials, including a large prostate cancer prevention trial. UCIMC is highly regarded for its regional burn center, neuropsychiatric facility, level 1 trauma center, Antoci Center for Pediatric Urology and Nephrology, Yamanouchi Center for Urological Education, and neonatal intensive care center. The newly founded Christopher Reeves-Joan Irvine Research Center focuses on spinal cord injury research. UCIMC was recently awarded a prestigious Magnate Hospital Designation for nursing excellence conferred by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Less than 2% of hospitals nationwide have met the rigorous Magnet criteria.

The Antoci Center for Pediatric Urology and Nephrology is the only facility of its kind in Orange County. Established with a generous gift from the Antoci family, the center is a 5,000 square-foot complex dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric urologic and nephrologic disorders. The facility includes a state-of-the-art fluro-urodynamic suite, biofeedback therapy, and ultrasound suite.

The Training Hospitals

UCI Medical Center (UCIMC) is the principal facility for the UCI School of Medicine. It is the only university medical center in Orange County (OC). This 462-bed facility is a fully accredited general and emergency hospital and is the only designated comprehensive emergency service and level 1 trauma center in Orange County. It recently received designation as a Children's Hospital. A new University Hospital is scheduled to be completed in 2008. The new, main hospital building will contain up to 251 beds, as well as new operating and procedure rooms. This addition will augment the existing 108 beds in the medical center's tower and the 84-bed Neuropsychiatric Center.

VA Long Beach Healthcare System (LBVA) is a 567-bed facility, located 12 miles west of UCIMC and 1/2 mile from the Pacific Ocean. The LBVA is a comprehensive facility, providing complete medical care for veterans. The facility includes a large Spinal Cord Injury Center (75 beds), Women's Veterans Health Clinic, Comprehensive Cancer Center, Same Day Surgery Center, and research facility.

Kaiser Permanente Anaheim Hills is a large HMO facility. It has a licensed bed capacity of 200 with over 100 physicians and 1000 employees on site. It is located 8 miles from UCIMC. As part of this rotation, the residents also rotate through Tustin Hospital and Medical Center, where most of the surgical cases are performed. The Kaiser/Tustin urology resident is exposed to all aspects of adult and pediatric urologic disease.

Long Beach Memorial Medical Center (LBMC) , a 726-bed complex, is the second largest private hospital on the west coast. It includes the Miller Children's Hospital (200 beds), Memorial Hospital, Memorial Women's Hospital, Memorial Rehabilitation Hospital, Memorial Heart Institute, and Memorial Cancer Institute. The residents rotate through Miller Children's Hospital during the pediatric urology rotation.
