Clinical Skills Center

General Information

A Premier Clinical Instruction and Assessment Facility
The Clinical Skills Center at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine is located in the J. Edward Berk Alumni Medical Education Building. Offering state-of-the-art training, the Center was developed to teach and assess the clinical skills of medical students, residents, M.D.s and other healthcare professionals in an environment that simulates an actual clinical setting. Participants are monitored and recorded to evaluate their clinical performance related to obtaining a medical history, conducting an appropriate physical examination, and developing treatment management plans. All clinical practice examinations (CPX), Objective Structured Clinical Exams (OSCE), and other clinical assessments are done in this facility.

The Clinical Skills Center is a 2,850 square foot high-tech center which incorporates the latest and best innovations in interactive medical instructional technology, as well as 10 clinical examination and interview rooms with video cameras linked to an audio visual center, a clinical skills laboratory, a simulation room with three simulators used for teaching and assessment,  faculty development conference areas, a computer learning lab, and a separate waiting area for actual and standardized patients.

Standardized Patient Information
A Standardized Patient (SP) is a person who has been trained to portray an actual patient by simulating an illness. The use of SPs is a known technology for helping the learner obtain interpersonal, communication, interviewing, counseling, assessment, physical exam and patient management skills. The School of Medicine at UC Irvine is always looking for people to be trained as SPs to portray patients for various curricular activities and assessments of students' and residents' skills. SPs are paid for their participation in this activity. Most SP activity occurs during daytime hours, but occasionally evening hours are required.

Ideal candidates are motivated, have good cognitive recall of facts, and are disciplined performers who are willing to "act" out a role as defined by the parameters of a clinical scenario and case.

If you are interested in becoming a standardized patient, please contact cbonora@uci.edu or 949-824-6150.
Standardized Patient Profile (English)

Medical Students
During their course of study at UC Irvine, medical students have several experiences at the Clinical Skills Center. Faculty from the UCI School of Medicine instruct and observe students' interactions with professionally trained standardized patients, and then provide a personal evaluation of student performance. Also, students may be evaluated for clinical skills during several experiences using standardized patients.

Residents
During their time at UC Irvine, residents have several experiences at the Clinical Skills Center. These experiences vary from inclusion in research projects, being evaluated in clinical encounters with standardized patients, and serving as evaluators for medical students and family nurse practitioner students.
