Residency Program

Structure
The categorical residency in obstetrics and gynecology is a four year program usually commencing immediately following graduation from medical school. Completion of the first year will satisfy most state board requirements for an internship. The residency program structure currently consists of six residents in each class. There is no "pyramid" system and all residents selected in the first year are expected to complete the four year program.
The program provides vigorous training and each service is headed by a senior resident who maintains, and is ultimately responsible for, the management of that service. Progressive responsibility is delegated to junior level residents based on their levels of training and competence. At UCI Medical Center, all patient admissions (including faculty private patients) are managed by residents, with appropriate faculty supervision.
