Residency Program

A Message
from the Chairman,
Manuel Porto, M.D.
The residency is truly the centerpiece of our outstanding department family. Our stellar faculty uniformly cites the residency, and specifically our outstanding resident physicians, as a major reason they came to UCI. Perhaps even more importantly, it is why we have been able to retain faculty with national and international acclaim and grow our department so consistently for nearly three decades. It is certainly why I have continued to genuinely enjoy practicing and teaching at UCI Medical Center over the past twenty years.
The goal of our program is to prepare our residents to achieve their professional goals, from general obstetric and gynecologic private practice to fellowship training in subspecialties, research and teaching. In recent years, approximately half of our graduates have chosen to pursue fellowship training at some of the best programs in the country, while an equal number have had their choice of wonderful practice opportunities both locally and nationally in a wide array of settings. This variety is reflected in the structure of the program, where experience is gained through intensive exposure to primary outpatient and inpatient care at UCI Medical Center, rotations at a variety of outstanding affiliated institutions, as well as rotations in all subspecialties. Teaching is led by our committed faculty in a balance of clinical experience, didactic lectures and one on one teaching. Our fellows and more senior residents are integrally involved in the teaching of residents and medical students as well.
We invite you to explore the program website for further information, but the best way to appreciate the unique sense of family that permeates all levels of our department and the residency in particular, is to experience it first hand with a visit.
