Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine

Edward J. Quilligan, MD

Professor Emeritus
Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine

Dr. Edward J. Quilligan, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of California, Irvine, College of Medicine, and Executive Director of Medical Education at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, is one of the world's most respected specialists in maternal fetal medicine. During his career of more than forty years, he has compiled an impressive record of research, authorship, and academic leadership. Dr. Quilligan's career as an educator and leader in academic medicine is equally distinguished. As a visiting professor and lecturer, he has traveled to Japan, Europe, and throughout the United States and Canada. He has chaired the Departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the schools of medicine at Yale University, USC, the University of Wisconsin, and UC Davis. He has also served as associate Vice President for Health Sciences at USC. In 1987, he returned to UC Irvine, where he once served as Director of the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine, to become Dean of the University of California, Irvine, College of Medicine, and the first Vice Chancellor of Health Sciences. In 1989, he returned to teaching the practice of medicine at UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange.

Research Interests

One of the principal founders of the subspecialty of maternal fetal medicine, Dr. Quilligan is internationally recognized for his research. He has conducted a number of major studies on the effects of labor in the cardiovascular system of the mother and the fetus. His work contributed substantially to the development of the practice of fetal monitoring during labor. Due to his pioneering efforts, physicians are able to identify fetal distress at a much earlier stage which has led to reduced complications and infant mortality. His subsequent studies have focused on the function of the uterus in pregnancy, the role of abnormal oxygen levels in fetal brain damage, fetal breathing, the fetal sleep state, and problems of high risk pregnancies. His current interests include primarily the causes of brain damage in the fetus, particularly those situations associated with oxygen deficiency in and around the time of labor and delivery.
