Educational Interests

Serving as the Senior Associate Dean of Educational Affairs for 10 years, Dr. Alberto Manetta has administrative responsibility for the education of physicians, including the educational program leading to the M.D. degree, postgraduate medical education (residency and fellowship programs) and continuing medical education of practicing physicians. He is also administratively responsible for the clinical training of allied health and nursing professionals that takes place at the UCI Medical Center. Under his stewardship, accreditation was granted for the maximum number of years for both undergraduate and graduate medical programs.

Clinical Interests

Dr. Manetta has a special interest in gynecologic malignancies including ovarian, vulvar, cervical, and uterine cancers as well as complex pelvic surgeries. Dr. Manetta was chosen as one of the Best Doctors in America in 2001 and included in the 1996-97 edition of the Best Doctors in America: Pacific Region.

Research Interests

Dr. Manetta has always believed in the importance of preventing gynecologic, especially cervical, cancer. He was awarded a 5 year grant by the NIH National Cancer Institute and is the Principal Investigator of the Single Visit Cervical Cancer Prevention Program. This program focuses on a new and simplified approach to the screening for cervical cancer.

Dr. Manetta and his colleagues are studying biomarkers in cervical carcinoma and clinical correlation of the novel biomarker MN. Expression of the protein product of the MN gene and of Intestinal alkaline phosphatase is closely correlated with the tumorigenicity of HeLa x fibroblast hybrids. The study of clinicopathologic correlates of the MN biomarker expression in cervical cancer, the expression of the MN expression in Pap smears associated with clinical regression of dysplasia, and the role of MN in tumorigenesis and the regulation of MN expression have been completed.
