Family Medicine Scholars |
Family medicine is the medical
specialty which provides continuing, comprehensive
health care for the individual and family. It is a
specialty in breadth that integrates the biological,
clinical, and behavioral sciences. The scope of
family medicine encompasses all ages, both sexes, each
organ system, and every disease entity.
The family physician of today is rooted in the
historical generalist tradition. The first
physicians were generalists who for thousands of years
provided all of the medical care available. However, as medical knowledge expanded and technology
advanced, many physicians chose to specialize and limit
their practices to defined areas of medicine. The
development of family medicine as a specialty grew out
of a public need for personal physicians who could
provide initial, continuing, and comprehensive care and
prevent the ever increasing fragmentation of care.
Family medicine is a three-dimensional specialty,
incorporating knowledge, skill, and process. The
family medicine process is unique. At the heart of
this process is the patient-physician relationship with
the patient viewed in the context of the family. It is the extent to which this relationship is valued,
developed, nurtured, and maintained that distinguishes
family medicine from every other specialty.
The
UC Irvine Department of Family Medicine
is pleased to sponsor a Family Medicine Scholars program
that is intended for committed students pursuing Family
Medicine as a career. Through a variety of specially
designed activities and experiences, this program seeks
to enhance each participant's understanding of family
medicine, facilitate their personal growth and
development as physicians, and provide guidance and
mentorship in career planning. The Family Medicine
Scholars of today will hopefully be the leaders of our
specialty tomorrow! |
