Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) at UC Irvine

We are proud to announce that our FMIG is now an officially recognized University club!

About FMIGs:
A student run club. The FMIG offers students a variety of activities to assist in providing information about Family Medicine. Activities often include: conferences, workshops, advocacy initiatives, lunches, and meetings. Family Medicine Interest Groups (FMIG) at each medical school in California provide a network for students interested in family medicine. CAFP sponsors FMIG activities.  (Adapted from CAFP)

Our Goals:

At the University of California, Irvine, the FMIG aims to:
  • Increase exposure to family medicine
  • Educate students about training and career opportunities in family medicine
  • Demonstrate the importance and diversity of family medicine
  • Promote post-graduate training and practice in family medicine
  • Support those students interested in family medicine
  • Create connections and relationships between family physicians and students AND between students with other students
  • Improve the image of family medicine in the academic and medical school setting
Information about Family Medicine and Physicians:
Family medicine is the specialty that integrates the biological, clinical, and behavioral sciences.  It includes both sexes, all ages, races, religions, ethnicities, each organ system, and every disease.  Family physicians can care for all members of the family because of their broad-based training.

Family medicine's emphasis on preventive medicine, comprehensive care, alternative treatments, patient education and family systems including the entire life cycle makes them the ideal primary care providers. (Adapted from the AAFP)
