This cartoon, a bit wild even for the eye of an overly-seasoned neuroanatomist, depicts the circuit anomalies in schizophrenia. The closed and open forebrain loops are asymmetrical in the limbic and cognitive prefrontal systems, and anterior cingulate "switches" may determine alterations in mood states in types of schizophrenia.

This slide is one in a series of 30 to show how positive and negative symptom schizophrenia circuitries are different, and how these are differentiated from affective disorders such as major depression, bipolar disorder, and PTSD.
